GTA IV: Blowing Holes Through Equal Opportunity Insult Arguments

I had a big long discussion about this with Casey. He is otherwise an incredibly sensitive, tolerant, tuned-in, feministy kind of guy, but he bought the game the day it came out and has been playing it a lot. When I worried to him about the misogyny in the game, he just shrugged and said, "You're right. But the rest of the game is fun."

And I think that's the problem--it's not that video game companies should be criticized for making the games, but that the public finds violence, racism, and sexism so fun. The problem isn't with the corporations (for once), but with the culture. And I mean, yeah, they could not make games like that and it'd be better than having them, but--as corporations do--they're just responding to market forces. I don't think the demand for these games is going to go away if the supply does. I think we need to fix the reason people want the games. The problem isn't that the games exist; it's that people want them.
